Customer.io and HubSpot both run lifecycle email, but they are built for different teams. Customer.io is a messaging platform: it sends email, push, in-app and SMS from your product's data and events, and charges by profile. HubSpot is a CRM with marketing, sales and service tools, and the automation a SaaS lifecycle needs, with product events as triggers, starts on Marketing Hub Professional: $890 a month, plus a one-time $3,000 onboarding fee, on the prices HubSpot shows US visitors. Those prices also depend on where you sign up, which we explain below. We build a third option, SendHeron, so this article also says where it fits and, just as plainly, where it does not.

Prices below are as of October 20, 2026, on monthly billing where it is offered, from each vendor's own pricing pages and catalogs: Customer.io and HubSpot in US dollars, SendHeron in euros. Prices change, so check before you decide.

Customer.io pricing

Customer.io's Essentials plan starts at $100 per month, billed monthly, for 5,000 profiles. A profile is a person or an object, such as an account or an order. Essentials includes 1,000,000 emails a month, the visual workflow builder, transactional email, unlimited push and in-app messages, two object types, two workspaces, unlimited user seats, and email and community support. Above the included volume, Essentials charges $0.009 for each additional profile and $0.12 per 1,000 additional emails. SMS is priced separately on every plan.

Premium starts at $1,000 per month billed yearly, with custom profile and email volumes, ten object types, chat support and onboarding help. Enterprise is priced on a call. A startup program gives up to twelve months free to eligible companies that have raised under $10 million.

HubSpot pricing

These are the Marketing Hub prices HubSpot's pricing page shows visitors in the US.

  • Starter lists at $20 a month per seat. New customers currently pay $10 a month per seat month to month, or $7 a month per seat paid upfront for a year. It includes 1,000 marketing contacts and simple workflows of up to 10 actions each, such as a follow-up after an email open or click or a form submission.
  • Professional costs $890 a month on monthly payments with an annual commitment, or $800 a month billed annually. It includes 3 seats and 2,000 marketing contacts, and requires a one-time onboarding fee of $3,000. It adds full workflows, up to 300 of them, with custom events from your product as triggers.
  • Enterprise costs $3,600 a month, billed annually, with 5 seats and 10,000 marketing contacts included and a required one-time onboarding fee of $7,000.

Marketing contacts are the contacts you send marketing email to; all other contacts are free, up to 15 million contacts in total. More marketing contacts cost, per month, $50 per 1,000 on Starter at first and $250 per 5,000 on Professional, falling at higher volumes. If you go over your tier, HubSpot bills you immediately, and the tier cannot be lowered until your contract renews. The monthly marketing email limit is 5, 10 or 20 times your marketing contact tier on Starter, Professional and Enterprise. Transactional email is a $600-a-month add-on that sends from its own dedicated IP, and a dedicated IP for marketing email is a separate $300-a-month add-on, both for Professional and Enterprise. A free plan covers up to 2 users with 2,000 email sends a month and HubSpot branding.

HubSpot's price depends on where you sign up

HubSpot does not show everyone the same pricing. From a German IP address, the same pricing page sells one platform priced per seat, which HubSpot calls flexible seats-and-credits pricing. Per seat a month, Starter costs $10 billed monthly or $7 billed annually, both limited-time discounts for new customers, Professional $100 or $90, and Enterprise $175, billed annually. On that model marketing contacts are not billed separately but count toward a record limit, and every email except one-to-one inbox mail uses HubSpot Credits unless you buy an email sends pack: 15 credits per email for the first 10,000 sends, falling after that, at $0.01 a credit, with 5,000, 10,000 or 15,000 credits included a month. An email sent from a workflow is charged twice, once for the send and once for the workflow step, and if you have not bought extra credits, the features that use them pause when the included credits run out. Free accounts get 300 email sends a month instead of 2,000. HubSpot's partner materials describe this model as its new pricing for net-new customers in EMEA, so check the pricing page from the country you will sign up in.

SendHeron pricing

SendHeron charges by subscribed contacts, with one monthly allowance of emails that marketing and transactional share. The full details are on the pricing page.

PlanPriceSubscribed contactsEmails a month
Starter€19 per monthup to 10,00050,000
Growth€49 per monthup to 40,000150,000
Scale€99 per monthup to 100,000250,000
Max€179 per monthup to 200,000500,000

Only subscribed contacts count. Unsubscribed and bounced contacts are stored free, and sequences, tags and segments are unlimited on every plan. Transactional email keeps flowing even when the allowance is spent, up to 10% over the plan's pool. There is no free plan: every plan starts with a 7-day trial that takes a card at checkout, runs with reduced limits of 1,000 contacts and 5,000 sends, and converts to the plan you picked unless you cancel before it ends.

The pricing math

The same job on each tool: lifecycle sequences triggered by what users do in your product, on the US prices, monthly where offered.

ScenarioCustomer.ioHubSpotSendHeron
5,000 contacts$100 (Essentials)$1,140: Professional at $890 plus one block of 5,000 marketing contacts at $250€19 (Starter)
40,000 contactsabout $415: $100 plus 35,000 extra profiles at $0.009$2,790: Professional at $890 plus eight blocks of 5,000 marketing contacts, four at $250 and four at $225€49 (Growth)

All figures beyond the base plans are our arithmetic from the listed rates. HubSpot adds the $3,000 onboarding fee once, and $600 a month if it also sends your transactional email; Customer.io and SendHeron include transactional email. HubSpot's price also buys a CRM with sales and service tools and 3 seats, so if you would pay for a CRM anyway, compare the marketing part of the bill. HubSpot Starter costs far less, but its automation is limited to simple follow-ups, and custom events from your product as triggers need Professional.

Feature comparison

Sequences and automation

Customer.io builds lifecycle campaigns in a visual workflow builder on every plan, triggered by the events and attributes your product sends, and it can branch on objects such as accounts as well as people. HubSpot's full workflows start on Professional, with up to 300 workflows and custom events as triggers; Enterprise raises that to 1,000 workflows. Starter has simple workflows of up to 10 actions each, such as a follow-up after an email is opened or clicked or a form is submitted. Sending a marketing email from your own app through HubSpot's single-send API needs Enterprise on the US prices. SendHeron builds sequences visually from the tags and events your app sets, and its AI setup reads your website and drafts a welcome, trial, win-back and cancel-save suite for you to approve.

Transactional email

Customer.io includes transactional email on every plan. HubSpot sells it as a $600-a-month add-on to Professional and Enterprise, bought through its sales team. SendHeron includes it, and the same templates serve receipts, password resets and lifecycle mail from one send allowance.

What counts as a contact

This line moves the bill more than any feature. Customer.io counts profiles, which include objects as well as people. HubSpot counts marketing contacts, the people you send marketing email to, in tiers you buy ahead and pay for immediately when you exceed them. SendHeron counts only subscribed contacts and stores unsubscribed and bounced ones free.

CRM and the rest of the platform

HubSpot is a CRM first: contacts, companies and deals sit at the center, with marketing, sales and service tools sold as hubs around them, and seats for the people who use them. Customer.io sends messages from data your product and your CRM provide; it does not replace a CRM. SendHeron is email only and works the same way, from the data your app sends.

Channels

Customer.io includes push and in-app messages without a monthly limit on every plan, prices SMS on request, and supports WhatsApp and webhooks. HubSpot's marketing tools center on email, alongside website, social and ads tools. SendHeron is email only. If your onboarding leans on push or in-app messages, that settles it in Customer.io's favour.

Data and security

Customer.io includes single sign-on, two-factor authentication and US or EU data centers on every plan. HubSpot hosts accounts in the US, Canada, Australia or the EU in Germany, chosen by the location you sign up from, and paid accounts can change data center; single sign-on starts on Professional. SendHeron is an EU company and stores contact data in Europe.

Who should use what

Choose Customer.io if

  • Your lifecycle runs on product events across email, push and in-app messages
  • You want transactional email included and a price per profile
  • You want single sign-on and an EU data center on the entry plan

Choose HubSpot if

  • You want your CRM, sales pipeline and marketing in one system
  • Your marketing is mostly lead generation, with forms, landing pages and ads, rather than product lifecycle
  • You have the budget for Professional and its onboarding, and your sales team works in HubSpot already

Choose SendHeron if

  • You run a SaaS and want lifecycle sequences and transactional email from one API and one allowance
  • You would rather approve a drafted lifecycle suite than build one from a blank canvas
  • You want to pay for subscribed contacts, not for seats, contact tiers or onboarding

SendHeron is the wrong pick if you need push, in-app messages, SMS, a sales CRM or a pipeline. Customer.io or HubSpot fits those better today.

Frequently asked questions

Is HubSpot more expensive than Customer.io?

For lifecycle email, yes. At 5,000 contacts, HubSpot Marketing Hub Professional with enough marketing contacts comes to about $1,140 a month plus $3,000 onboarding, against $100 for Customer.io Essentials. HubSpot's price includes a CRM and sales tools, which Customer.io does not try to be.

Can HubSpot Starter run SaaS onboarding emails?

Only simple ones. Starter's simple workflows have up to 10 actions each and start from events such as an email open or click or a form submission. Custom events from your product as triggers need Professional.

Does HubSpot include transactional email?

Not by default. It is a $600-a-month add-on to Marketing Hub Professional and Enterprise. Customer.io and SendHeron include transactional email.

Why does HubSpot show me different prices?

HubSpot is rolling out a seat-and-credit model for new customers in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, while US visitors still see its Marketing Hub plans with marketing contacts. Check the pricing page from the country you will sign up in.

Is HubSpot vs Customer.io a different question from Customer.io vs HubSpot?

No. It is the same comparison in the other order, and everything above applies.

Start with the one that fits

If your lifecycle runs on product events across email, push and in-app, start with Customer.io. If you want your CRM, sales pipeline and marketing in one system and have the budget for Professional, start with HubSpot. If you run a SaaS and want lifecycle and transactional email on one bill, start a 7-day trial of SendHeron. It takes a card; cancel before it ends and you will not be charged.
