Customer.io and Intercom both send onboarding and lifecycle messages, but they start from opposite ends. Customer.io is a messaging platform: it sends email, push, in-app and SMS from the data and events your product gives it, and charges by profile. Intercom is a helpdesk with an AI agent built in, and its proactive messages are sold on top of support seats: email billed per message, and multi-step and most in-app campaigns through a $99 add-on. So the question is less which one is better than which job you are buying for. We build a third option, SendHeron, so this article also says where it fits and, just as plainly, where it does not.
Prices below are as of October 20, 2026, on monthly billing, from each vendor's own pricing page and help center: Customer.io and Intercom in US dollars, SendHeron in euros. Prices change, so check before you decide.

Customer.io pricing
Customer.io's Essentials plan starts at $100 per month, billed monthly, for 5,000 profiles. A profile is a person or an object, such as an account or an order. Essentials includes 1,000,000 emails a month, the visual workflow builder, transactional email, unlimited push and in-app messages, two object types, two workspaces, unlimited user seats, and email and community support. Above the included volume, Essentials charges $0.009 for each additional profile and $0.12 per 1,000 additional emails. SMS is priced separately on every plan.
Premium starts at $1,000 per month billed yearly, with custom profile and email volumes, ten object types, chat support and onboarding help. Enterprise is priced on a call. A startup program gives up to twelve months free to eligible companies that have raised under $10 million.
Intercom pricing
Intercom charges for seats and for usage. Billed monthly, a full seat costs $39 on Essential, $99 on Advanced and $139 on Expert; billed annually, $29, $85 and $132. Every plan needs at least one full seat, and only full seats can send messages. The pricing page also shows some visitors a new-customer offer on Essential, $29 a month or $19 billed annually; the help center lists $39 and $29.
- Essential covers live chat in the Messenger, a shared inbox with ticketing, a public help center, pre-built reports and basic automation.
- Advanced adds the workflow automation builder, multiple team inboxes, round robin assignment and 20 free Lite seats.
- Expert adds SAML single sign-on, HIPAA support, service level agreements and 50 free Lite seats.
On top of seats you pay for what you use:
- Fin AI Agent, the support agent, costs from $0.99 per outcome on every plan ($9.99 for a sales qualification), and nothing if you do not switch it on.
- Email campaigns are billed per email sent through Outbound, Series, the contacts list or the API, on falling tiers: 4.5 cents each for the first 100, $0.003 each between 10,001 and 50,000 emails a month, and less above that. Intercom's calculator puts 10,000 emails at $79 a month, 50,000 at $199 and 100,000 at $324. Bounced and duplicate addresses are billed too; replies from the support inbox are free.
- Proactive Support Plus costs $99 a month per workspace, with no annual discount, and is the only way to get Series, Intercom's multi-step campaign builder, along with posts, product tours, checklists and surveys. It includes 500 messages a month, where a post, tour or carousel counts each time it is shown, then from $0.07 per message down to $0.0175 at volume.
- Chats, banners and tooltips are free on every plan. SMS and WhatsApp are billed per use.
There is no free plan. A 14-day trial needs no card, and a startup program for new customers with up to $10 million in funding and fewer than 15 employees costs $65 a month in its first year, 93% off its package.
SendHeron pricing
SendHeron charges by subscribed contacts, with one monthly allowance of emails that marketing and transactional share. The full details are on the pricing page.
| Plan | Price | Subscribed contacts | Emails a month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | €19 per month | up to 10,000 | 50,000 |
| Growth | €49 per month | up to 40,000 | 150,000 |
| Scale | €99 per month | up to 100,000 | 250,000 |
| Max | €179 per month | up to 200,000 | 500,000 |
Only subscribed contacts count. Unsubscribed and bounced contacts are stored free, and sequences, tags and segments are unlimited on every plan. Transactional email keeps flowing even when the allowance is spent, up to 10% over the plan's pool. There is no free plan: every plan starts with a 7-day trial that takes a card at checkout, runs with reduced limits of 1,000 contacts and 5,000 sends, and converts to the plan you picked unless you cancel before it ends.
The pricing math
The same job on each tool: lifecycle email sequences built and run by one person, on monthly billing, without support seats or Fin.
| Scenario | Customer.io | Intercom | SendHeron |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5,000 contacts, 10,000 emails a month | $100 (Essentials) | $217: one Essential seat at $39, $79 for the emails, and $99 for Proactive Support Plus | €19 (Starter) |
| 40,000 contacts, 100,000 emails a month | about $415: $100 plus 35,000 extra profiles at $0.009 | $462: one Essential seat at $39, $324 for the emails, and $99 for Proactive Support Plus | €49 (Growth) |
The Intercom figures include Proactive Support Plus because multi-step campaigns need Series. Without it, single emails sent on audience rules cost $118 and $363. The Customer.io figure at 40,000 is our arithmetic from its listed rate. With Intercom's new-customer Essential price of $29 a month, each Intercom total is $10 lower, and every additional support agent adds a seat.
Two things the table hides. Intercom's cost grows with every email you send, while Customer.io's grows with profiles and includes a million emails a month. And Intercom's price buys a full helpdesk: if you would pay for one anyway, the comparison is the messaging add-ons, not the whole bill.
Feature comparison
Lifecycle automation
Customer.io builds lifecycle campaigns in a visual workflow builder on every plan, triggered by the events and attributes your product sends, and it can branch on objects such as accounts as well as people. In Intercom the multi-step builder is Series, in the Proactive Support Plus add-on, and its entry rules are checked once an hour, or when a user loads the Messenger. Intercom's Workflows, on Advanced and Expert, automate conversations, and Intercom notes they cannot be started directly from a custom event your backend sends; it points to Series for that. SendHeron builds sequences visually from the tags and events your app sets, and its AI setup reads your website and drafts a welcome, trial, win-back and cancel-save suite for you to approve.
Email and transactional mail
Customer.io includes transactional email on every plan, from the same platform as its campaigns. Intercom sends event-driven emails in its highest priority queue and says they usually go out within seconds or minutes, with delays of up to 30 minutes at busy times. Its help center also says that if you send email through the API with full control of the HTML, you would use a separate email provider. Intercom requires a website running its Messenger and a manual sender review before outbound email goes out. SendHeron includes transactional email, and the same templates serve receipts, password resets and lifecycle mail from one send allowance.
Channels beyond email
Customer.io includes push and in-app messages without a monthly limit on every plan, prices SMS on request, and supports WhatsApp and webhooks. Intercom includes chats, banners and tooltips free, meters posts, product tours, surveys, mobile push and carousels in its add-on, and bills SMS and WhatsApp per use. SendHeron is email only. If your onboarding leans on in-app tours or push, that settles it against SendHeron.
Support
Intercom is a helpdesk first: shared inbox, ticketing, a help center and Fin, its AI agent, priced per outcome. Customer.io focuses on lifecycle messaging rather than a helpdesk; its in-app inbox is a message feed, not a support chat. SendHeron is email only. With either of them, support stays in another tool.
Seats, data and security
Customer.io includes unlimited user seats, single sign-on and two-factor authentication, and US or EU data centers on every plan. Intercom charges per full seat, includes single sign-on and HIPAA support on Expert only, and offers EU or Australian hosting for new workspaces on Advanced and Expert under a contract; otherwise data is hosted in the US. SendHeron is an EU company and stores contact data in Europe.
Who should use what
Choose Customer.io if
- Your lifecycle runs across email, push and in-app messages, triggered by product events
- You want many teammates in the tool without paying per seat
- You want predictable cost per profile with a million emails a month included
- You need an EU data center on a self-serve plan
Choose Intercom if
- You want support, live chat, a help center and an AI agent in the same product as your proactive messages
- Your proactive messaging is mostly in-app banners, tooltips and tours for users who are logged in
- Your support team already works in Intercom and lifecycle email is a small part of what you send
Choose SendHeron if
- You run a SaaS and want lifecycle sequences and transactional email from one API and one allowance
- You would rather approve a drafted lifecycle suite than build one from a blank canvas
- You want to pay for subscribed contacts, not for every email or every seat
SendHeron is the wrong pick if you need push, in-app messages, SMS, a support inbox or live chat. Customer.io or Intercom fits those better today.

Frequently asked questions
Is Intercom cheaper than Customer.io?
For lifecycle email, usually not. At 5,000 contacts and 10,000 emails a month, Intercom comes to about $217 with one seat and the add-on that multi-step campaigns need, against $100 for Customer.io Essentials. Intercom is the better buy when you also need its helpdesk, because the seats do double duty.
Can Intercom send email campaigns?
Yes, on every plan, billed per email sent, from 4.5 cents each for the first 100 down to fractions of a cent at volume. Multi-step campaigns need Series, which comes with the $99-a-month Proactive Support Plus add-on.
Does Intercom have a free plan?
No. It offers a 14-day trial without a card, and a startup program for new customers with up to $10 million in funding and fewer than 15 employees, at $65 a month in its first year.
Does Customer.io have live chat?
Not as a support channel. Customer.io focuses on lifecycle messaging, and its in-app inbox is a message feed rather than a chat with your team, so support conversations stay in a helpdesk.
Is Intercom vs Customer.io a different question from Customer.io vs Intercom?
No. It is the same comparison in the other order, and everything above applies.
Start with the one that fits
If your lifecycle runs on product events across email, push and in-app, start with Customer.io. If you want support and proactive messages in one product and your outbound is mostly in-app, start with Intercom. If you run a SaaS and want lifecycle and transactional email on one bill, start a 7-day trial of SendHeron. It takes a card; cancel before it ends and you will not be charged.
